Update to “Eve of Destruction”

Dear friends, I have decided to update the Barry McGuire classic “Eve of Destruction” with a new theme about Eastern Europe and the recent war in Ukraine.

Here are the updated lyrics.

“Eastern Europe, It is exploding”
“Violence flaring, bullets loading”
“You’re old enough to kill, but not for drinkin'”
“You don’t believe in war, but what’s that AK you’re toting?”

“Even the Don River has bodies floating”

“But you tell me, over and over and over again, my friend”
“Ah, you don’t believe we’re on the eve of total destruction”
“Don’t you understand what I’m trying to say?”
“Can’t you feel the fears I’m feeling today?”
“If Putin pushes the button, there’s no running away”
“They’ll be no one to save, with the world in a grave”
“Take a look around you, man, it’s bound to scare you, man”

“And you tell me, over and over again, my friend, ah you don’t believe we’re on the eve of total destruction”

“Yeah, my blood’s so mad, it feels like coagulating”
“I’m just sitting here writing in America”
“I can’t twist the truth, it knows no regulation”

“Handful of parliamentarians can’t pass legislation”
“And the Maidan marches alone can’t bring integration”
“When human respect is disintegrating”
“This whole crazy world is just too frustrating!”

“And you tell me, over, and over again, my friend, ah you don’t believe, we’re on the eve of total destruction”

“Think of all the hate there is in North Korea, then take a look around, to Charlottesville, Virginia”
“You may leave for 3 weeks in space, but when you return, it’s the same old place”

“The pounding of the drums, the pride and disgrace”
“You can bury your dead, but don’t leave a trace”
“Kill your next door neighbor, but don’t forget to say “Vechnaya Paymat!”

“And tell me over and over and over again, my friend, you don’t believe we’re on the eve of total destruction?”

“MMMM… you don’t believe, we’re on the eve of total destruction”

My updated lyrics to reflect the situation in Ukraine from an American perspective.

And a note to the song, “You can bury your dead, but don’t leave a trace!” This is what Russian forces are mostly doing in Ukraine, trying to not leave a trace, just to fool the world into believing that there are no Russian soldiers in Ukraine, to “officially” cover their asses.

“My Slavic brothers are killing each other over in Eastern Europe and I have no money to go and stop the war and bring peace to Eastern Europe!” This is yet another Eastern European blowup, a quarter century after the last one.
I fear that the war in Ukraine will eclipse the Bosnian War, in terms of sheer brutality and a high death toll. When will the Slavic fratricide end?
